The FRPA kicked of it's 2005 season with a stunning performance in the USA Canoe/Kayak Team Southwest Senior Team Trial Qualifier and Texas Whitewater Championships the weekend of Feb 19-20.
After a week of training in the warm waters of the Guadalupe River, south of Austin, Texas the team rose to new heights. With excellent coaching from three-time Olympian, Davey Hearn and 1996 Olympian Ben Kvanli. FRPA members proved that a full winter worth of hard training would improve their racing skills.
For some of the FRPA racers this was their first race including twelve year old Tyler Hinton and the new C2 team of Coach Chris Wiegand and Nic Borst. Nic and Chris were both individual qualifiers at the 2004 Olympic Team Trials in men's kayak and canoe.
All of the FRPA members raced very well and a good percentage were able to qualify for Sr. Team Trials, which will be held in Durango, Colorado the weekend of the 10th through the 13th of June.
Michael Turvey and Nick "Fuzzy" Chanin qualified in Men's kayak. Lisa Adams and Colleen Hickey qualified women's kayak spots and the C2 team of Borst and Wiegand rounded off FRPA qualification.
FRPA athletes also took advantage of Texas cultural gems as well as some other interesting rivers including the San Marcos River and a steep class IV-V Creek. View Mexican creek & the FRPA Training Video.
FRPA athletes also enjoyed visiting the Alamo at 12:30 at night and enjoyed mexican food on San Antonio's famous River Walk.
This was the perfect way to kick off the strenuous 2005 season. FRPA racers look forward to yet another successful season.
